Co-sponsored by Denmark and Germany, Palestine’s second Social Accountability Forum was held in the West Bank city of Ramallah on 27 August, 2015.

Palestine’s second Social Accountability Forum is the culmination of two years of Danish-German cooperation in the area of social accountability and youth participation in Palestine, which includes a number of pilot programmes as well as other interventions. These initiatives have largely set the benchmark for improved social accountability in Palestine.

The forum, held in the West Bank city of Ramallah on 27 August, 2015, saw the release of Palestine’s first National Policy Papers on Social Accountability and Youth Participation. Attending the opening session was Dr. Rami Hamdallah, Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority, Dr. Hussein Al A’raj, Minister of Local Government, Dr. Bettina Kellersmann, Head of Development Cooperation from the Representative Office of the Federal Republic of Germany, and Ms. Esther Lønstrup, Head of Cooperation at the Representative Office of Denmark in Ramallah. Also in attendance were several other ministers and mayors from localities across the West Bank, as well as representatives from a number of civil society and youth organisations, and ordinary community members.

Speaking on behalf of international partners, Ms. Lønstrup commended national and local authorities, civil society organisations and community members, for working closely together to make social accountability a reality in Palestine. In particular, she stressed the importance of social accountability mechanisms in strengthening democratic governance in Palestine, and highlighted the many benefits they offer to both citizens and government authorities alike.
