Tomorrow, the 24th of October, the UN is celebrating its 70th anniversary.

The anniversary will be a global event under the theme “Turn the World UN Blue”, which means that more than 160 iconic monuments, buildings, museums, bridges and other landmarks in nearly 50 countries around the world will be lit up blue – the official colour of the United Nations. The landmarks include sites as the Opera House in Sydney, Australian, the Great Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, Petra in Jordan to the to the Little Mermaid in Copenhagen.

In addition to the “Turn the World UN Blue” event, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the President of the General Assembly, Mogens Lykketoft, will on Saturday attend the unveiling of a new art installation dedicated to UN. The installation is created by Spanish artist Cristóbal Gabarrón, which has created the Enlightened Universe that features 70 life-size figures – representing the 70 years of the Organization – joined hand in hand around a huge globe. The figures are designed to represent a human chain of global citizens, joined in solidarity, tolerance, respect for nature and shared responsibility.
